Richard Gutierrez addressed the growing conversation surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) use in Philippine television after confirming that the ABS-CBN action-drama series “Blood vs Duty” utilized the technology in some scenes, Inquirer.net reported.

During the finale media conference of the series on Monday, July 13, the actor explained that AI was only applied as a tool to improve certain visual elements and was not used to create complete scenes.
“Kasi ang AI, nandiyan na ‘yan eh. We have to accept the fact that it’s gonna be there for a very long time. And sa filmmaking, merong mga parts na maitutulong ang AI,” he said.
Gutierrez acknowledged that AI has become part of modern filmmaking but emphasized that creators must be careful when using the technology. He warned that relying too much on AI could affect the artistic value of a production.

“If you overuse it, it’s going to question the integrity of the art,” he said.
The actor further explained that “Blood vs Duty” only used AI for minor improvements, including cleaning up backgrounds and enhancing certain parts of scenes. He stressed that the series did not depend on AI-generated content for its storytelling.
“So kami, Blood vs Duty, we used AI, but we used it to enhance the scene and not really na ‘yung buong eksena ng AI. It’s really just touches, isang pitik lang ng AI… to enhance it a bit, ’yung background. Kailangan namin linisin ng konti,” he said.
Gutierrez also pointed out that many people now associate different visual technologies with AI, even though some techniques have existed in the industry for years. He explained that computer-generated imagery (CGI) has long been used in films and television projects.
“And you know, ‘yung term na AI ngayon, I think it’s being overused sa filmmaking a lot. But that’s actually CGI. Before kami, we would use a lot of CGI to back up the scenes, to help the scenes, to enhance the scenes. But CGI is old technology kasi it takes a long time to do that,” he explained.
He added that AI has provided assistance in speeding up production processes, especially in the fast-paced environment of teleserye production.
“Sa way or system ng teleserye-making natin dito, we need the help of AI to make things faster kasi we’re always pressed for time. But ayoko rin na ’yung buong eksena ng AI. So, we have to find that fine line kung hanggang saan natin gagamitan ng AI,” he said.
Meanwhile, co-star Gerald Anderson agreed that AI will likely become part of the entertainment industry’s future. However, he also raised concerns about protecting workers who may be affected by the technology.
“Yan yung future talaga natin eh. So, kailangan natin i-embrace ’yan,” Anderson said.
“Sana in the future malagyan din siya ng regulation. Kasi para maprotektahan din ’yung mga artista. They should push something for that. Para maprotektahan lahat. Not just ’yung artista, kundi ’yung prod. Lahat may chance na pwedeng mawalan ng trabaho,” he added.
The discussion comes amid wider public debates about AI’s role in Philippine entertainment. “Blood vs Duty” continues to highlight issues involving gun smuggling, family struggles, and the realities faced by Muslim Filipino communities through its action-drama storyline.
