Television host and GMA trivia master Kuya Kim Atienza has spoken out against the belief that wealthy individuals cannot genuinely support social causes, saying a person's financial status should never determine their right to become an activist.

During his guest appearance on veteran journalist Karmina Constantino's podcast, KC After Hours, Atienza discussed the criticism directed at his daughter, Eliana Atienza, who has actively joined demonstrations in the United States expressing support for Palestine amid the conflict with Israel.

Constantino recalled how many online users focused more on Eliana's privileged lifestyle than on the cause she was supporting.

“Noong mga panahon na ‘yon, ang pinuntirya ‘yong lifestyle, ‘yong social status [ni Eliana], as if ‘pag ganyang level ka wala ka nang karapatan [maging aktibista],” Constantino said.

Atienza immediately disagreed with that perception.

“Hindi,” he replied.

He pointed out that many financially successful people have long been involved in meaningful advocacies.

“Ang dami nating kilalang mayayaman na ang laban e malalim ‘di ba? Pero it's a good story kasi. It's a good picture to paint para mapasama siya.”

He also explained how narratives can easily be shaped to fit public assumptions.

“Kunyari sinasabi mo homeless-homeless ka, paano magiging homeless ang tatay mo nakasakay sa first class?”

The television personality then clarified why his family once traveled on Emirates First Class, saying the trip was a special gift from his wife, Fely Atienza, after she completed her Master of Science in Nutrition at Tufts University in Boston in 2024.

“She treated me and the family to Emirates first class.”

He admitted that although he normally flies business class, he never considered First Class a necessity.

“Aaminin ko, when I travel business [class] ako. Pero first class, hindi ko kailangan ng first class.”

According to Atienza, the fare difference became manageable because the tickets were booked well in advance.

“Pero dahil graduation niya 2 years ago sa Tufts, ‘Papa we're going to fly first class Emirates.’ ‘Yong first class kasi ng Emirates parang a few hundred more expensive than business lang 'yon, e, if you get it early in the year.”

The discussion also brought back memories of another online controversy involving his late son, Emman Atienza.

Emman previously became the subject of criticism after participating in the viral "Guess the Bill" challenge, where viewers believed the expensive restaurant bill shown in the video was genuine.

He later clarified that the content had been intended as satire.

“The video was a joke.”
“I thought it was obvious and the bill was an outrageously high number.”
“But apparently, it's believable that I can pay that much for dinner.”

In the challenge, participants guessed the total cost of their meal, with whoever came closest paying the bill. Emman estimated ₱120,000, while Miss World 2024 Krishnah Gravidez guessed ₱130,000, which was eventually revealed to be the closest estimate.
