In the Philippines, a plunder case involves the illegal accumulation of wealth by a public official through corrupt practices like embezzling public funds, receiving kickbacks, or other forms of financial misconduct. According to Republic Act No. 7080, plunder is defined as the illicit acquisition of at least 50 million pesos in public funds or property by a government official over time. Politicians accused of plunder are typically believed to have used their position to steal large amounts of money through schemes such as overpricing contracts, accepting bribes, or diverting funds for personal use. Those convicted of plunder can face life imprisonment and the forfeiture of their ill-gotten wealth, and the case is considered a serious form of corruption that can ruin a politician's career and reputation.
