“I have filed my withdrawal as vice mayor Candidate of Davao City,” Baste’s text message read.
Baste revealed that he is nominating Atty. Melchor Quitain Jr. to run as vice-mayor in his stead.
Davao City 1st District Councilor Quitain is the city council’s majority leader.
In a text message to members of the media, VM Baste expressed gratitude to “Dabawenyos” for supporting him all throughout his term as vice mayor.
He did not provide any other information, saying he has "no other details to share at the moment."
A few hours after Baste went to the local COMELEC office to withdraw his COC for vice mayor, a breaking news by Philippine Star reported Mayor Sara also has withdrawn her reelection bid for mayor.
Like VM Baste, Mayor Sara did not state the reason why she is withdrawing, though announced she is nominating Baste to run in her stead.
It is not clear if his withdrawal has something to do with rumors about Mayor Sara seeking a national post through substitution method.
For several weeks now, supporters of Mayor Sara have been pushing for her candidacy as either president or vice-president.
At the moment, Mayor Sara is keeping her political cards close to her chest, though supporters say there will be some major political changes in the next few hours.
