American actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun on the set of the movie "Rust" in New Mexico on Thursday, killing a film crew member and wounding the movie’s director.

In a report by CNN, the film’s director of photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, was flown to hospital via helicopter and pronounced dead by medical personnel at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

Director Joel Souza, 48, on the other hand, was rushed to Christus St. Vincent's Regional Medical Center by ambulance for care.

As per New York Times, spokesman for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office Juan Rios said the shooting happened in the middle of a scene that was either being rehearsed or filmed.

According to BBC, as of this posting, authorities are still investigating the incident at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular filming location, and no charges have been filed.

The movie, "Rust" is an American Western film written and directed by Joel Souza. It is based on a story created by director Souza and American actor Alec Baldwin, who stars alongside Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon, Frances Fisher, and Jensen Ackles.

It was announced last year in May that Baldwin would star in and produce the said movie.

Alec Baldwin, born as Alexander Rae Baldwin III on April 3, 1958, is an American actor, writer, comedian, film producer, and political activist. His first acting role was as Billy Aldrich in the NBC daytime soap opera "The Doctors" from 1980 to 1982. Baldwin made his film debut with a minor role in the 1987 film "Forever, Lulu". The actor has received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Donald Trump on the long-running sketch series "Saturday Night Live", a role that won him his third Primetime Emmy in 2017.
