Panettiere’s family confirmed her death after she was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, 2026. Authorities have said the cause of death remains under investigation, and no foul play has been suspected.
Following the news, Klitschko released an emotional statement reflecting on Panettiere’s place in his life and, most importantly, her role as the mother of their daughter, Kaya.
“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief,” Klitschko said.

He described Panettiere’s death as deeply saddening and said she “left this world far too soon.” Although the two were no longer together, he emphasized that she remained an important part of his life.
“Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya,” he said.
Klitschko also recognized both sides of Panettiere’s life, remembering her considerable accomplishments as an actress while acknowledging the difficulties she experienced away from the spotlight.
He said Panettiere had built an “incredible career through immense talent,” while also confronting what he described as the darker side of a demanding entertainment industry.
“Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives,” he added.
Panettiere and Klitschko welcomed their only child, daughter Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, in December 2014. Kaya was born during the couple’s relationship, which began in 2009 and eventually led to their engagement.
The couple separated for the final time in 2018. During Panettiere’s struggles with postpartum depression and addiction, Klitschko became Kaya’s primary caregiver, and Panettiere ultimately relinquished full custody to him. Panettiere later spoke about how painful that decision was while explaining that she believed prioritizing her daughter’s well-being was the right thing to do.
Despite the complicated circumstances surrounding custody, Panettiere maintained a relationship with Kaya. Recent accounts have described the mother and daughter as remaining closely connected through visits and regular communication.
In his statement, Klitschko promised that he would make sure Kaya remembers her mother with love and respect.
“To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was,” he said.
He also extended his condolences to Panettiere’s parents, friends and fans, while appealing to the public to give their family privacy as they mourn.
“I ask everyone to please respect our family’s feelings and privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” Klitschko said.
He concluded his message with a final farewell: “Rest easy, Hayden. May you find eternal peace.”
Panettiere began working as a child and eventually became one of the recognizable young stars of American television and film. She gained major international attention as Claire Bennet, the seemingly indestructible cheerleader on the hit NBC series “Heroes.” She later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes on “Nashville,” a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations. Her film credits included “Remember the Titans,” “Scream 4” and “Scream VI,” while she also voiced Dot in “A Bug’s Life.”
Klitschko, meanwhile, established his own international legacy as one of boxing’s most accomplished heavyweight champions. The Ukrainian fighter held world heavyweight titles and spent years among the sport’s dominant figures before retiring from professional boxing in 2017. His career included major victories over numerous heavyweight contenders and a lengthy reign as a world champion.
The deaths of other international entertainment figures have also recently drawn attention.
Young deaf actress Kaylee Hottle, who was known for portraying Jia in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” reportedly died at 18 following a car crash in Frederick, Maryland. Her father, Joshua, confirmed the devastating news in a video, while the Texas School for the Deaf also issued a statement remembering the young actress.
Meanwhile, American actress Daveigh Chase reportedly died at 35. Before her death, Chase had reportedly been dealing with meningitis and multiple serious blood infections, according to a GoFundMe page established by her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez. Hernandez also discussed the difficulties Chase experienced in her personal life and expressed his hope of providing her with comfort and peace during her final days.
