Jeric Raval defended actors-turned-politicians Robin Padilla and Lito Lapid against criticisms questioning their qualifications as senators, saying both are capable of handling serious political discussions.

During his guest appearance on “Kay Susan Tayo! Vlogs,” Jeric was asked by host Susan Enriquez about his thoughts on people who believe celebrities should stay in showbiz instead of entering politics.

Susan pointed out that some critics question why actors are serving as senators and suggested that their background in showbiz has led some people to doubt their capabilities in government. She then asked Jeric for his perspective, particularly because of his friendship with Robin and his previous work with Lito.

“Anong masasabi mo ngayon doon sa mga bumabatikos sa mga politiko, mga senador na sabi dapat wala naman diyan dahil mga artista lang naman 'yan? Dapat showbiz na lang 'yan. Anong masasabi mo doon? Especially you, si Robin, parang kaibi-kaibigan mo. Si Senator Lapid, nakatrabaho mo,” Susan inquired.

Jeric said he believes Sen. Robin is often misunderstood by the public, particularly when it comes to the way he thinks. He maintained that, based on his personal understanding of the senator, Sen. Robin is capable of handling his responsibilities.

“Personally ha, nami-misinterpret lang nila 'yung tao (Sen. Robin). The way he thinks naman, okay naman eh,” Jeric said.

“Both Senator Lapid and Senator Padilla?” Susan asked.

Jeric responded that he believes both senators can handle their roles. He specifically pointed to Robin's ability to participate in and sustain serious conversations as an example of his capability.

“Oo, kaya naman nila. Mga lawyer naman 'yang mga 'yan eh. Kaya naman nila 'yan. Look at him, he can handle a conversation. He can carry a heavy conversation,” he responded.

The actor's remarks came amid a broader discussion about the perception that celebrities who enter politics may lack the qualifications needed to hold public office. Susan raised the common assumption that being an actor automatically means a person is less capable when it comes to politics or governance.

“Kasi 'di ba ang tingin ng ilan, 'Ah, kapag artista, wala 'yan, mahina 'yan,'” the broadcast journalist followed up.

To which Jeric replied, “Eh alam mo naman dito sa atin sa Pilipinas, maraming magagaling eh. Maraming matatalino. Pero sila 'yun dalhin mo doon, baka worse.”

Jeric Raval is a veteran Filipino actor who established himself as one of Philippine cinema's iconic action stars during the 1990s. After making his feature film debut in "Primitivo 'Ebok' Ala" (1992), he went on to build a multi-decade career starring in numerous action movies, indie films, and mainstream television series.

In the same interview, Jeric recalled how his action star image often led people to challenge him to fights in bars during his younger years. He admitted that drinking in the late 1990s made him overly confident, even comparing himself to Hollywood action star Steven Seagal. Looking back with laughter, Jeric reminded viewers not to imitate his past behavior.

Jeric also opened up about the difficulties of raising his 18 children with seven different women, admitting that he would not encourage others to take the same path. He recalled experiencing financial hardships and doing everything he could to support his family, particularly when the local film industry faced a downturn.
