Actor and director John Lapus, also known as Sweet, confirmed that Atasha Muhlach went through an audition process for “Bongga Ka Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical” following questions raised online about her casting as the lead character.

Sweet, who is part of the upcoming musical production, addressed the claim questioning whether Atasha auditioned before being chosen for the role. On X, Sweet shared the link to his YouTube vlog titled “Bongga Ka Day Musical Sweet Audition,” which featured moments related to the auditions.

In the caption of his post, he directly addressed the issue and confirmed Atasha’s participation in the process.

Through his post, Sweet pointed audiences to the documented footage as proof of Atasha’s participation.

The role of Annie Batungbakal carries a notable legacy in Philippine entertainment, as it was originally portrayed by Nora Aunor in the 1979 film of the same name. Decades later, the iconic character will return on stage through a musical production inspired by the classic songs of the legendary Manila Sound band Hotdog.

“Bongga Ka Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical” was initially planned to premiere years ago but was postponed after the COVID-19 pandemic affected theater productions and live entertainment events. The musical is set against the colorful disco scene of Manila in the 1970s and follows Annie, a young woman who secretly explores the city’s nightlife while pursuing her dream of becoming a fashion designer.

The musical is scheduled to open this September at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
