The role was first brought to life by the late National Artist Nora Aunor in the 1979 film "Annie Batungbakal." The upcoming musical takes inspiration from the timeless songs of the Manila Sound band Hotdog and was originally scheduled to debut six years ago before it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Set during the lively disco era of 1970s Manila, the story follows Annie, a young woman who secretly ventures into the city's vibrant nightlife while pursuing her dream of becoming a fashion designer. Along the way, she faces challenges that test her identity and ambitions.
The musical will also feature several of Hotdog's well-loved classics, including "Manila," "Pers Lab," "Beh, Buti Nga," "Panaginip," "O, Lumapit Ka," "Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko," and the title song, "Annie Batungbakal." The production is set to open this September at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
