The role of Annie Batungbakal holds a significant place in Philippine entertainment history, having been originally portrayed by Nora Aunor in the 1979 film of the same name. Decades later, the character will return on stage through a musical production inspired by the classic songs of the legendary Manila Sound band Hotdog.
“Bongga Ka Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical” was initially scheduled to premiere years ago but was postponed after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted theater productions and live entertainment events. Set against the vibrant disco scene of Manila in the 1970s, the musical follows Annie, a young woman who secretly explores the city’s nightlife while pursuing her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
“Bongga Ka Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical” is scheduled to open this September at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
