Politics in the Philippines gets more and more interesting as years go by. There were politicians who stayed true to their campaign and those who really made a change in the lives of many Filipinos and the entire Philippines.

KAMI listed 6 politicians who made an impact this 2018 in no particular order. These politicians are those who fulfill their duties despite the controversies they got involved with.

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo made it to the headlines when she was appointed as the new House Speaker, replacing former Speaker of the House Pantaleon Alvarez during the 3rd State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Rodrigo Duterte. Macapagal-Arroyo is the first female and first former President to assume this post.

In a previous report by KAMI, Macapagal-Arroyo has 4 notable bills filed as the House Speaker. The former President filed her first bill which seeks to regulate the trades of sharks, rays, and chimaeras in the Philippines. She also filed the House Bill No. 7857 or the Timbangan ng Bayan Centers bill as well as the House Bill No. 6028 which seek for women to use their maiden name after separation.

Born on April 5, 1947, Macapagal-Arroyo was the 14th President of the Philippines. Before that, she served as the first female Vice President of the Philippines. After her administration, she was involved in many controversies including her plunder case.

Tito Sotto

Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III is the 29th Senate President of the Philippines under the Duterte administration. During his term, he was involved in several controversies.

As previously reported by KAMI, Sotto had five remarks that went viral. He was accused of plagiarism and he was criticized for calling the Philippine national anthem as “Bayang Magiliw” instead of “Lupang Hinirang”. He also proposed to change the last line of the national anthem which drew flak to the netizens.

Sotto filed the Senate Bill 1906 or the TRAIN 2 law which seeks to lower corporate income tax. However, he said that he will be revising the TRAIN 2 to abolish the taxes on books and other publications. In addition, Sotto filed Senate Bill 2026 which seeks to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 13-years-old.

Born on August 24, 1948, Sotto was the Vice Mayor of Quezon City from years 1988 to 1992. In 1992, he was elected as senator until 2004. He sought re-election in 2010 and is currently on his 4th term. Sotto is also a known TV host of GMA Network’s Eat Bulaga!and member of iconic OPM group VST & Company.

Leni Robredo

Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo is a lawyer and social activist. She is the widow of late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo. In 2016, she won as the second female Vice President of the Philippines under the Liberal Party which promotes democracy in the country.

In a previous report by KAMI, since Robredo assumed her post, she has been doing her flagship project which is the Angat Buhay. As of July 2018, Angat Buhay was able to help 155,000 families all over Philippines. She also co-authored the House Bill 3587 or the Anti-Political Dynasty bill as well as the House Bill 3237 or the Freedom of Information Act.

Born on April 23, 1965, Robredo won as the representative of Camarines Sur’s third district. When she won for vice presidency, she faced an electoral protest against former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. which led to a recount under Commission on Elections.

Antonio Trillanes

Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV is a former Philippine Navy officer. He was involved in some political controversies such as the Oakwood mutiny in 2003 and Manila Peninsula siege in 2007. Despite being detained at the Philippine Marines headquarters, Trillanes won as a senator in 2007.

Trillanes is a known opposition senator. He was a vice president candidate in 2016. As reported by KAMI before, Trillanes and President Duterte had been throwing tirades against each other ever since the 2016 electoral campaign.

Recently, President Duterte signed Proclamation No. 752 which declared to revoke the amnesty of Trillanes given to him by former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. He faced charges regarding the Oakwood and Manila Peninsula incident. However, he was granted to post bail for the rebel case and he was not given an arrest warrant for the coup d’etat case.

Born on August 6, 1971, Trillanes was tagged as the “most productive” senator during the 15th and 16th Congress for filling 1, 434 bills and resolutions despite his low record in attendance as reported by KAMI.

Rodrigo Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte is the 16th and incumbent President of the Philippines. Duterte is the chairperson of the PDP-Laban political party. He is also known for his strong personality and controversial jokes.

In a previous report by KAMI, President Duterte has 6 notable projects and accomplishments under his administration. His flagship program is his anti-narcotics campaign which aim to lessen the drug addicts all over the Philippines. The government has launched the ‘Build, Build, Build’ program which seeks to invest more on infrastructures all over the country. President Duterte also ordered for the restoration of Boracay Island.

Born on March 28, 1945, President Duterte is the oldest to ever assume this position. He was the Mayor of Davao City since 1988 to 1998. He ran again as mayor in 2001 and was re-elected in 2004 and 2007. He became the Vice Mayor of his daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio in 2010.

Manny Pacquiao

Boxing icon and Senator Manny Pacquiao has been serving in the Senate since 2016. In a report by KAMI before, Pacquiao was behind the Senate Bill No. 1277 or the Free Internet Access Program Act. He also co-authored the Republic Act 10679 which seeks to promote entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills among Filipinos as well as the Republic Act 10699.

Along with Senator Cynthia Villar, Pacquiao is one of the billionaires in the Senate. However, his generosity has been making rounds online. As reported by KAMI, during his 40th birthday, the People’s Champ gave away four cars, 58 motorcycles, and 24 40-inch LED TVs. He also treated 4,000 people to free groceries.

Due to his inspiring rags to riches life story, KAMI reported before that Pacquiao was invited by Oxford Union and Cambridge Union to speak about his success story. He shared about making a balance of being a politician and professional boxer.

Born on December 17, 1978, Pacquiao first entered politics as a Congressman in 2010. He served as the representative of Sarangani under Nacionalista Party. He started boxing since he was 14-years-old. He was the first boxer to ever win the major titles in four of the original weight classes in boxing. As of this year, Pacquiao is the WBA welterweight champion.
