Having a relationship in show business could be very hard to the point that it became pretty normal when couples would break-up or get annulled. Only few are blessed to have a long-lasting marriage in the limelight and one of those is Tito Sotto and Hellen Gamboa.

It was indeed a love at first sight. Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and actress-singer Helen Gamboa started their love story back in 1967. Sotto was a recording artist and a record producer before. Meanwhile, Gamboa was a beauty queen and an actress.

“Low batt agad ako. I knew right there and then that I wanted to be with her,” Sotto said.

KAMI has learned that Sotto admitted he had a hard time courting Gamboa because her parents were strict.

“She was very difficult to court because her mom was always with her. Sometimes, I’d pretend that she had to record a song just to talk to her. I courted her secretly and it took us more than a year to finally arrive to a ‘mutual understanding,” Sotto said as reported by SunStar Philippines.

In 1969, the two eloped. They have decided to secretly marry each other in Sto. Tomas, Batangas and the plan was to make Gamboa to be home before the dawn. However, things did not go as planned. They went home late and according to Sotto, Gamboa’s parents got mad at him. In 1971, they got married in church again.

“Right after the wedding, that was the only time I was allowed to visit her, to formally court her. I would visit her three times a week. We didn’t stay in the same house until our January 1971 wedding, which was 14 months after our Batangas nuptials.”

The couple had four wonderful children, Romina, Diorella, Gian Carlo and Ciara.

Sotto also shared the hard work in a relationship. “Always go for the give and take, but it’s better if the man will be more understanding than the woman because they go through different phases in their lives. Things change when they get pregnant and start having kids. Men should always support and give leeway to women,” he said.

He also believes in the principle of ‘happy wife, happy life’. “I try my best to make her happy. She takes care of me but it has always been about her. If she’s happy, then I’m happy. She’s my everything. In my 69 years, we have been together for 49 years. She is my life,” Sotto shared.

Aside from politics, Sotto is known for being a veteran host of Eat Bulaga. How does he manage his time?

“They ask me how I balance things? I don’t. I weave them together. I don’t go out at night. I make sure to have breakfast and dinner at home. But more than that, it’s all because of Helen. She’s the glue holding us together.”

Sotto was also involved in many controversies. When Gamboa asked to comment about it, she just said, “I should know my husband better than anybody.”

"I’m so thankful to God na ganito ang pagsasama namin. We always have peace and harmony in our house.

“Parang nasanay na rin ako na, pag sa showbiz, parang maraming naninira, maraming naiinggit,” Gamboa added in a report by PEP.ph.

During the recent birthday of Gamboa, Sotto has shared the gift he has been giving to her for the longest time.

“Sexy lingerie,” Sotto admitted in a report by Philippine Star.

“It doesn’t really have to be her birthday; maski walang special occasion. Every time I travel, I always come home with the same pasalubong for her, sexy lingerie. In the beginning, galit na galit siya. Pero ngayon hindi na,” he added.

The couple also loves travelling together.

So, what is the secret for a long-lasting love?

“None,” Sotto said.

“Just pure love,” he added.

Next year will be their 50th wedding anniversary! Pretty sure that the Sotto family will be preparing a lot for their golden anniversary.
