According to accounts of the incident, the players were participating in a training activity near the water when they encountered dangerous conditions.
The deaths prompted investigations by authorities into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the activities conducted during the team-building session and the responsibilities of those overseeing the athletes.
Rovelyn questioned the initial characterization of her son’s death as an accident and called for a more detailed explanation. In the days following the tragedy, she also expressed distress over the way she learned of Rene’s death, saying she wanted direct communication and clear information about what had happened.
The incident drew national attention because of the young athletes’ deaths and the questions raised about safety, supervision and accountability during organized sports activities. The families sought answers while the university and government agencies faced calls to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
The tragedy also placed Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin at the center of public scrutiny. The controversy also affected Baldwin’s position within the university’s basketball program. Ateneo placed Baldwin and team manager Epok Quimpo on leave while it conducted a fact-finding inquiry into the incident. Baldwin later resigned as head coach of the Blue Eagles amid the fallout. Amid the controversy, Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto “Bobby” Yap addressed the university’s response and its relationship with the bereaved families. Yap said Ateneo had been in contact with the Baterbonia and Adili families since the beginning and had repeatedly expressed its condolences and apologies. He also said the institution had offered assistance and intended to continue supporting the families over the coming years.
Rovelyn Baterbonia became known to the public as the mother of the late collegiate basketball player Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia Jr. After her son died during a team-building activity, she emerged as a vocal advocate for a thorough investigation and accountability, particularly concerning safety measures and supervision during sports-related activities. Her public statements have consistently reflected her determination to understand the circumstances of Rene’s death and ensure that the matter is addressed properly.
KAMI previously reported that Rovelyn personally gave Rene’s basketball jersey to Boss Toyo. The jersey had been worn by her son during his senior high school years. Both Rovelyn and Boss Toyo rejected reports claiming that the item had been purchased for ₱25 million. Rovelyn clarified that she handed over the jersey without requesting payment or expecting anything in return, emphasizing that the transfer was not the multimillion-peso transaction described in the reports.
In an earlier Facebook post, Rovelyn shared a smiling selfie with Angelica Yulo taken during a restaurant gathering. She captioned the post “Basher attack,” accompanied by broken-heart emojis, and also appeared with Angelica and their companions in a group photograph. The two women have both experienced the pressures of having sons who are widely recognized in Philippine sports. Rene played basketball for Ateneo, while Angelica’s son, Carlos Yulo, became an internationally celebrated gymnast after winning two Olympic gold medals.
