British-Israeli lawyer Nicholas Kaufman expressed confidence that former President Rodrigo Duterte would be acquitted in the International Criminal Court (ICC) case over alleged extrajudicial killings.

In a brief interview with Filipino reporters after meeting Duterte, Kaufman assured that he is prepared to mount the “strongest defense” for the former president.
“I’m very confident about the strongest defense and I’m very confident [Duterte would] be acquitted indeed, even at the earliest stage,” Kaufman said.
Kaufman, who was recently appointed as Duterte’s legal counsel, said assembling the defense team will be done in close coordination with Duterte and his advisers.

“At the present moment in time, I’ve just been appointed. It is my job and I’m privileged to carry this job out to compose the team for him. That would obviously be done in complete consultation with him and all those around him,” he added.
Duterte faces accusations of crimes against humanity before the ICC in connection with thousands of deaths linked to his antidrug campaign. The former president has repeatedly denied the charges, insisting that his actions were within the bounds of Philippine law.
Nicholas Kaufman is known for representing high-profile clients before international courts, including the ICC.
Former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte was the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines. He left Malacañang on June 30, 2022. The newly inaugurated President of the Philippines is Bongbong Marcos who got 31 million votes in the May 2022 elections. The new Vice President of the Philippines is VP Sara Duterte, the daughter of the former president.
Earlier, the former president was apprised of his rights under the Miranda Doctrine. In a video shared by GMA News, CIDG chief, Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, is seen reciting the Miranda Doctrine to the former president. The reading of the Miranda rights is a standard procedure for persons being arrested to ensure that the latter fully understands their rights upon their arrest. It can be recalled that the International Police (InterPol) has confirmed the issuance of the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against the former president.
An earlier video showing former President Rodrigo Duterte’s longtime partner, Honeylet Avanceña, seemingly trying to prevent the former leader from being taken into custody has gone viral. The video, which was posted on the social media page of their daughter, Veronica or Kitty Duterte and shared by ABS-CBN news on its own page, has since then gone viral. The said video also captured snippets of conversations between Avanceña and the former leader.
