The MPV driver was among the most seriously injured, becoming trapped inside his vehicle. His left shoulder was severely injured, according to Miguel Antonio Avila, incident commander of the Taytay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

“Hindi na siya makausap nang maayos, pero alam naman 'yung pangalan niya, saan siya nakatira. Pero ayun, sobrang sakit ng iniinda niya sa balikat, sa kaliwa,” Avila said.

A female jeepney passenger also sustained a head injury and was in critical condition. Other passengers and motorists suffered various injuries, including a college student who injured her leg while traveling to school.

Taytay police officer-in-charge Lieutenant Colonel Joel Custodio said investigators had received information suggesting that the truck driver might have been tired and that the engine brake may not have worked properly.

“According sa driver, hindi rin kumapit 'yung kambyo para sa engine break. Ang balita ko sobrang pagod. Inaantok,” Custodio said.

However, the truck driver denied being sleepy and explained that he swerved after being surprised by a jeepney unloading passengers and a nearby cyclist.

Police said trucks are discouraged from using the route because of its hazardous conditions and frequent accidents. Authorities plan to discuss a possible truck ban with the local government.
