Quezon City man arrested after allegedly stealing P359,000 from neighbor's apartment

A 24-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stealing cash and mobile phones worth approximately P359,000 from his neighbor's apartment in Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City, shortly after midnight on Friday. Police responded to the incident after the victim, who was away at work, discovered what was happening through a cellphone.

According to a report by GMA News reporter Gabriel Gonzales, CCTV footage showed the suspect entering the apartment and proceeding to the victim's bedroom. The victim was not physically present at the time but was able to watch the incident remotely using a mobile device.

The suspect reportedly managed to take money and several mobile phones before leaving the apartment. The victim immediately contacted authorities to report the theft, prompting a response from personnel at the Holy Spirit Police Station.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Wilfredo Fabros Jr., station commander of Holy Spirit Police Station 14 under the Quezon City Police District, described how the victim sought help after noticing the intrusion.

"Nagulat siya (biktima) bakit may tao. Kaya ang ginawa niya, tumawag siya sa base ng Holy Spirit sa atin at rumesponde naman kaagad ang mga tao natin," Fabros said.

Despite the police response, the stolen cash and mobile phones had not been recovered at the time of the report. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and detained at the custodial facility of Holy Spirit Police Station 14.

He is expected to face a theft charge in connection with the incident. Authorities also reported that the suspect admitted to carrying out the theft.

During the investigation, police reportedly discovered that the man had allegedly developed a gambling addiction. However, the report did not provide further details about his gambling activities or establish whether this was directly connected to his decision to steal from his neighbor.

The victim declined to give a statement to the media.

The incident highlights the importance of promptly reporting suspected crimes and seeking police assistance. In this case, the victim's ability to monitor the situation remotely helped alert authorities while the incident was unfolding, although the stolen belongings remained unrecovered according to the available report.

In another report, a man sustained injuries after being beaten by a group of seven to 10 individuals at the plaza in Dueñas, Iloilo. A video of the incident showed several men surrounding the victim and repeatedly kicking him. Initial police information indicated that the man had gone to the plaza to confront someone he accused of hurting his sibling.

Meanwhile, a man died after being shot outside a school in Barangay Prinza, Teresa, Rizal, on Thursday afternoon. A report by GMA News' “Unang Balita” stated that the victim was shot in the head at around 4 p.m. before the assailant fled. A video circulating online showed the victim on the ground while his live-in partner remained beside him, carrying their infant child. Barangay officials and tanods responded to the scene and helped manage the growing crowd of students and residents.
