In a statement, Aquino described the news as heartbreaking and extended his condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives, as well as to the community affected by the incident.
“Nakadudurog ng puso ang mabalitaan ang nangyaring karahasan sa Zamboanga kaninang umaga,” Aquino said.
The senator also reflected on the incident from the perspective of a parent, emphasizing how troubling it is to learn that a place intended to nurture young people's hopes and dreams could instead become associated with fear and violence.

“Bilang isang magulang, nakapanlulumo na malaman na ang espasyo kung saan nabubuo ang pag-asa at pangarap ay nagiging lugar ng takot at karahasan,” he said.
Aquino's remarks focused on the emotional weight of the incident, particularly for families who lost loved ones and members of the community who were affected by the violence.
He expressed solidarity with those mourning the deaths and those dealing with the aftermath of the incident.
“Lubos tayong nakikiramay sa mga pamilya at kaibigan ng nasawi at sa buong komunidad na naapektuhan ng insidenteng ito,” Aquino said.
The statement comes as the incident continues to draw attention to the importance of keeping communities and spaces associated with learning, growth and hope safe from violence.
For Aquino, the tragedy should not simply result in expressions of grief. He also stressed the need for collective action to ensure that a similar incident does not happen again.
“At gagawin natin ang lahat na hindi na ito maulit muli,” he said.
His message combined condolences for the victims and their loved ones with a commitment to preventing similar violence in the future.
The senator's statement also underscored the broader emotional consequences of violence. Beyond those directly involved, incidents of this nature can leave families, students, educators and entire communities grappling with fear and uncertainty.
Aquino emphasized that spaces where dreams and aspirations are formed should remain places where people can feel secure rather than threatened.
In another report, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. conveyed his sorrow over the incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University and ordered law enforcement agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation. The President stressed that schools must remain secure environments where students can study without fear. He also underscored the need to improve existing measures that protect learners, educators, and other members of school communities.
Meanwhile, Senator Win Gatchalian denounced the shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University following initial reports that two students lost their lives and several others were hurt. He called for authorities to thoroughly examine how two firearms were reportedly present in the incident. Gatchalian also emphasized the importance of providing immediate psychosocial assistance to students and school personnel who may have been affected by the traumatic event.
