The San Jose del Monte City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said the teenager was among four young people who went missing in the river on Monday.
Based on a witness account shared by the CDRRMO, the 17-year-old allegedly jumped into the river either to swim or cross it. However, the current was already strong at the time.
"As per witness, tumalon din po ito sa ilog. Allegedly gustong maligo or tatawid daw po sa ilog. Kaya lang po malakas na po iyong current kaya tinangay na din po itong si John Norbert," an official said in the report.
Rescuers later received information that a body had been spotted along the side of the river.
The team had to swim toward the other side to retrieve the remains and bring them to a safer area.
Authorities were able to identify the teenager partly because of the bracelet he was wearing. The item matched the description provided by his family.
"Sakto naman po yung bangkay na nakita natin eh meron din pong suot talaga na bracelet na itim," the official explained.
His parents later confirmed his identity. The report said his family and friends became emotional after the confirmation.
The parents were invited to the Sta. Maria Municipal Police Station for the official report.
Meanwhile, search operations are continuing for the three other missing youths.
Among them is 13-year-old Ron Jin Alciso of Barangay Gaya-gaya in San Jose del Monte. Two others, identified in the report as Mark Ivan Herona and Ryen Carl Deos Reyz, are from Caloocan.
Authorities said four teams were involved in the continuing search and possible retrieval operations.
"Ongoing po yung ating search and possible retrieval na po kasi almost magti-three days na," an official said.
Search efforts have continued even at night, with the parents of the missing youths staying with the teams as they wait for developments.
