A senior citizen died in a road accident in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental, while she was on her way home to celebrate her birthday with her family.

According to a report by GMA Regional TV aired on "Unang Balita" on Tuesday, the victim was traveling with her grandchild when their car was struck by another vehicle. The two were reportedly heading home for the birthday celebration when the collision happened.

The other car was being driven by a 16-year-old boy who allegedly lost control of the vehicle after overtaking a motorcycle.

Police said the teenage driver only had a student permit at the time of the incident. Authorities also reported that the minor admitted he had been drinking before the crash.

The impact proved fatal for the senior citizen, who was reportedly looking forward to celebrating her special day with her loved ones. Her death turned what was supposed to be a family occasion into a tragedy.

The teenage driver was also injured in the collision, along with four other passengers who were traveling with him. They were brought to a hospital for medical attention following the incident.

Authorities are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the crash, particularly the teenager's alleged drinking and the circumstances that led to him losing control of the vehicle.

The minor remains in the hospital for treatment. Once his medical condition allows, he is expected to be turned over to the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The incident highlights the serious consequences that can result from unsafe driving, particularly when a vehicle is operated by a minor who allegedly consumed alcohol. For the victim's family, a day meant to mark another year of her life instead became a painful loss.
