The snake was safely rescued by personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) after a customer noticed something unusual inside a box of items being sold at the ukayan. The incident was reported by GMA Regional TV and featured on “24 Oras Weekend” on Saturday.
According to the BFP, the customer initially noticed a smooth object while going through the stuffed toys. The unusual discovery eventually led to the realization that the object was actually a live snake.
BFP personnel responded and carried out the rescue operation, carefully removing the python from the box. The reptile was estimated to be around four to five feet long and weighed nearly three kilograms.

The unexpected discovery left the secondhand shop with an unusual situation, particularly because the snake had been concealed among items that customers could easily pick up and examine.
Fortunately, the python was successfully secured during the operation. There were no reported injuries connected to the incident.
After being rescued, the snake was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which will handle the reptile following its removal from the shop.
The discovery also highlights how wildlife can sometimes find its way into places where people may not expect to encounter animals. In this case, the python was found in a box filled with stuffed toys, making its presence particularly surprising for shoppers.
Reticulated pythons are native to the Philippines and are known for their considerable size. Although the snake found in Dumaguete was relatively young or smaller compared with the largest members of its species, its presence inside a busy secondhand shop was enough to prompt immediate action.
For the customer who first noticed the strange object, what began as browsing through secondhand goods quickly became an encounter with a live python.
The BFP’s intervention ensured that the snake was removed safely and eventually placed under the care of the appropriate environmental authorities.
