A man was caught by residents after allegedly breaking into a house and stealing a cellphone in Barangay San Vicente, Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.

A video captured the suspect escaping from the second floor of the house. Residents chased him after learning about the alleged theft.

According to a report by 24 Oras, the homeowner discovered that the man was still inside after they tried calling the missing cellphone. The device rang while the suspect was reportedly hiding under a bed.

“Sinubukan nilang tawagan ’yung cellphone. Ngayon po, nag-ring. So ’yung magnanakaw po, nandoon pa rin po,” a resident said in the report.

Because of the ringing phone, the homeowner was able to locate the man. However, the suspect managed to get out of the house before residents started chasing him.

People in the neighborhood worked together to search for the suspect. One witness said they did not immediately find him despite checking the surrounding area several times.

“Hanggang sa natagpuan din lang noong mga taga rito sa amin. Nandoon pala, nakahiga sa damuhan, nagtatago,” the witness shared.

The man reportedly ran again after residents spotted him. He later jumped into the Macalong River in an apparent attempt to get away from those pursuing him.

However, the suspect reportedly did not know how to swim. Residents eventually caught him in the river and turned him over to the authorities.

The man allegedly had companions during the incident, but they managed to escape. Their names and other identifying details were not disclosed in the report.

Residents also claimed that the suspect was not from the area. They alleged that he was known for stealing in different barangays. Police did not provide additional information supporting the claim.

The Urdaneta City Police later released the suspect because the victim decided not to pursue a formal complaint against him.

Without a complaint from the homeowner, authorities could not proceed with the case. The report did not provide further details about the man’s current whereabouts.
