Tacloban City witnessed an emotional moment of mourning as Vice President Sara Duterte visited the wake of victims of the recent school shooting that shocked the community.

The Vice President arrived early Wednesday morning at the wake of Chris Lorenz Fabian, one of the students killed in the incident. Her visit formed part of her personal expression of condolence to the families affected by the tragedy that unfolded at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.

During her visit, she spent time with the bereaved families, listening to their grief and offering comfort in the midst of their loss. She also expressed sympathy for what the families described as an unbearable tragedy involving their children.

In a message posted on her official Facebook page, Duterte also shared her personal statement of condolence and solidarity with the families of the victims. She wrote:

"PAKIKIRAMAY SA MGA NASAWING ESTUDYANTE SA TACLOBAN CITY"

In a show of condolence and solidarity, the Vice President extended her sympathies to the grieving families of the victims of the Tacloban City school shooting, which left several students dead and others injured.

"Binisita natin ngayong araw ang burol nila Joyancee, Lorenz, at Ayessa sa Tacloban City, Leyte—mga estudyanteng nasawi sa pamamaril sa loob mismo ng San Jose National High School noong June 22, araw ng Lunes."

The Vice President’s visit came as families gathered to mourn their loved ones, with many still struggling to come to terms with the sudden and violent loss inside the school campus.

"Personal nating ipinaabot ang ating taos-pusong pakikiramay, pati na ng aking buong pamilya, at ng Tanggapan ng Pangalawang Pangulo sa kanilang mga pamilya at kamag-anak na labis ang hinagpis sa sinapit ng kanilang mga mahal sa buhay."

During the wake, Duterte conveyed not only her personal condolences but also those of her family and office, as bereaved relatives continue to express deep sorrow over the tragedy.

"Kasabay nito ang panawagan ng kanilang mga magulang na sana ay hindi na maulit ang ganitong pangyayari at mabigyan ng hustisya ang kanilang mga anak."

The families of the victims also used the moment to reiterate their appeal for justice, urging that similar incidents be prevented in the future through stronger measures and accountability.

The statement concluded with a call for unity and national reflection, emphasizing the importance of love for country amid grief and tragedy.

In another report, Vice President Sara Duterte expressed her willingness to personally attend the wake of Rene Clert Baterbonia, pending the final arrangement of the schedule. She said she had already inquired about the details of the wake and burial in Davao and emphasized her intention to extend condolences in person once everything is confirmed. Duterte added that she considers it important to show personal support to the grieving family during such a difficult time. She is currently waiting for the finalized schedule before making any visit.

Meanwhile, Vice President Duterte also earlier expressed disappointment over Ateneo’s response following the deaths of two student-athletes. She said schools should act quickly in communicating with and supporting bereaved families during tragedies. Duterte stressed that the situation should not be treated as an ordinary incident since it involves student-athletes and raised concerns about accountability. She also called for cooperation between the school and the families to better understand what transpired.
