The LTO said around 1,000 riders joined this year’s endurance challenge. Participants were required to cover a 1,288-kilometer route starting and ending in General Santos City, passing through the Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The only recorded fatality involved a rider in Kibawe, Bukidnon. LTO chief Markus Lacanilao said, “They committed a massive amount of traffic violations. Most of them were purely reckless, running through traffic lights.”
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing as they review video footage and assess accountability related to the event.
In other developments, a female pedestrian known as “Princess” was hit on January 26 by a barangay ambulance traveling against the flow of traffic along Batasan-San Mateo Road. The collision happened as she was crossing the street, with a parked van reportedly obstructing her view of the approaching emergency vehicle. The ambulance driver, Manuel Busto Jr., immediately stopped to help and personally brought the victim to receive medical care, pledging to cover all hospital expenses. Officials from Barangay Ampid Uno said they are now reviewing the driver’s authority to operate the ambulance and reassessing safety measures following the circulation of video footage of the incident.
Meanwhile, an alleged drug dealer identified by the alias “Tol” was killed on January 27, 2026, after a pursuit that began in Bacoor ended in a shootout in Kawit. During the escape, several civilians were injured after the suspect crashed into two motorcycles, a tricycle, and an SUV. Police said the chase ended near Marulas Bridge, where the suspect was fatally shot after he allegedly ignored orders to surrender and fired at officers who had cornered him.
