Former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor, Alice Guo, sentenced to life imprisonment

A Pasig Regional Trial Court sentenced former Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo to life imprisonment for qualified human trafficking.

Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission officials said Guo attended the promulgation online while detained at the Pasig City Jail Female Dormitory.

Her co-accused Rachelle Malonzo Carreon, Jaimielyn Cruz, and Walter Wong Rong were also found guilty.

They were identified as the group handling trafficking operations inside the Baofu compound, a 10-hectare site used by Zun Yuan Technology Incorporated, a company earlier linked to online fraud, torture, and other cybercrimes.

Wang Weili, Wuli Dong, Nong Ding Chang, and Lang Xu Po were likewise convicted for acts of trafficking.

Court records show each guilty party must pay a P2-million fine for every case, along with reparations to the victims. Baofu compound was further ordered seized by the government.

Guo and her group faced charges under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003, including its amendments in 2012 and 2022.

This case stemmed from a raid on a POGO hub in Bamban in June 2024, where more than 800 Filipinos and foreigners were rescued.

In September 2024, Guo pleaded not guilty. Her lawyer, Atty. Nicole Jamilla, said the former mayor firmly denied all accusations.

Alice Leal Guo was the Mayor of the Municipality of Bamban, Tarlac, and was eventually dismissed. She won as mayor during the national elections in 2022. She became known nationwide after her name was dragged into the ongoing Senate investigations regarding Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO) and the alleged proliferation of illegal immigrants. Her name has been the subject of many online memes since then.

Yesterday, September 23, Guo underwent a sputum test to determine if she has tuberculosis. This came after the result of her X-ray from the medical examination of the PNP showed a possible lung infection. The sputum test results were released by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). It showed that the results of the test were negative.

It can be recalled that a previous medical finding showed that Guo may be suffering from a lung infection. The BJMP spokesperson, Jail Superintendent Jayrex Joseph Bustiner,a told Super Radyo dzBB that it was what was discovered on the X-ray on the medical exam conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP). Because of the lung infection, she will be moved to a cell where three inmates suffering from tuberculosis are isolated.
