The crash, which took place in the capital's busiest thoroughfare, caused significant damage to both vehicles and snarled traffic in the area.
The incident was reported just after 6 a.m. near the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) office in the section of Commonwealth Avenue heading towards Fairview.
According to initial details from the Quezon City Traffic Bureau, the SUV crashed head-on into the rear of the garbage truck, resulting in a mangled front end for the smaller vehicle.
Debris from the SUV was scattered across the road, a testament to the force of the impact.
First responders quickly arrived at the scene to provide aid to the injured. Reports confirm that three individuals were hurt in the crash: the driver of the SUV and two occupants of the garbage truck.
They were immediately attended to by medical personnel and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The identities of the injured have not yet been released to the public.
The collision caused a major disruption to morning traffic, as four lanes of the wide avenue were rendered impassable.
Commuters were advised to take alternative routes as traffic slowed to a crawl. Authorities deployed a tow truck to the scene to remove the heavily damaged SUV and clear the roadway, with the hope of easing the traffic congestion as quickly as possible.
The Quezon City Traffic Bureau has since launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident. While the exact reason for the collision remains unclear, investigators will be looking into various factors, including possible driver fatigue, overspeeding, or a mechanical malfunction that may have led to the crash.
The location of the incident, a notoriously wide and fast-paced road often referred to as the "Killer Highway" due to its history of fatal accidents, adds a serious layer of concern to the investigation.
This event serves as a grave reminder of the importance of vigilance on the road, particularly during the early morning hours.
As the investigation progresses, authorities hope to uncover the specific circumstances that led to this unfortunate collision, while urging all motorists to exercise caution to prevent similar incidents in the future.
