In Japan, it is standard in many employment contracts to ban secondary jobs, with the intent of ensuring that employees devote their full attention and energy to their primary role.

Public school teachers are among those strictly bound by this rule.

The teacher admitted to taking the part-time job in November 2023 to supplement her income after being “rehired” by her school.

In Japan, “rehiring” allows retired employees to return to the same position but with a significantly reduced salary.

Expressing remorse, the teacher apologized for her “unethical” conduct, acknowledging that it damaged public trust in educators.

The Okayama City Board of Education also issued an apology to students over the matter.

The case has ignited discussions online, with many questioning the fairness of the rule against side jobs — especially when such work is honorable and conducted outside official working hours.
