The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 2025, along Shaw Boulevard in Barangay Kapitolyo, highlighting critical issues of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations.

According to GMA's 24Oras, the victim is a resident of Cainta, Rizal, was on his way home from work, riding his mountain bike along the eastbound lane of Shaw Boulevard.

According to police reports, a Suzuki Carry van, driven by a 39-year-old man, was stationary in the bike lane, with its driver and an assistant unloading water containers.

As the cyclist approached and attempted to pass the obstruction, the rear door of the delivery van suddenly opened, colliding with the right side of his bicycle.

The impact caused the cyclist to lose balance, swerve abruptly, and fall into the path of oncoming vehicles.

At that critical moment, a Mitsubishi Montero Sport, operated by a 59-year-old male driver, was traversing the same lane and inadvertently ran over the fallen cyclist.

The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities promptly responded to the incident, arresting both the 40-year-old SUV driver and the 59-year-old delivery van driver.

Both individuals are now facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in hom1cide and damage to property, with inquest proceedings underway at the Pasig City Prosecutor's Office.

The vehicles involved in the collision have been impounded as part of the ongoing investigation.

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto addressed the incident, stating that the city's Traffic and Parking Management Office (TPMO) is committed to stricter enforcement of traffic laws, particularly concerning bike lanes.

He also confirmed that city hall is in the process of contacting the victim's family to offer support.

The victim's family plans to hold a two-day funeral service in Cainta, Rizal, before his remains are transported to Iloilo City for final interment.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by traffic violations, especially the obstruction of dedicated lanes for vulnerable road users like cyclists.

Authorities consistently emphasize that bike lanes are established for the safety of cyclists and should not be utilized or obstructed by motor vehicles.
