A brazen attempt to steal prized fighting roosters in Tarlac City ended in a deadly confrontation early Tuesday morning in Barangay Care, leaving one suspect dead and two others injured after they encountered the owner of the birds – a local police officer.

According to a report from GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon on Friday, the incident unfolded when the police officer, whose identity has not been released, was awakened by the persistent barking of his dogs.

Upon investigating the disturbance outside his residence, the officer discovered a group of individuals in the act of stealing his valuable fighting roosters, loading them onto a tricycle.

The officer immediately confronted the suspected thieves. However, instead of surrendering, one of the suspects allegedly opened fire on the policeman.

Fortunately, the officer was not hit by the gunfire. The thieves then attempted to flee the scene aboard the tricycle.

Undeterred, the police officer retreated into his home to retrieve his firearm and pursued the fleeing suspects.

He managed to catch up with the trio along the Aquino boulevard in Barangay Carangian. It was at this point that a shootout ensued between the pursuing officer and the suspects.

During the exchange of gunfire, the police officer fatally shot one of the suspects. Two other suspects sustained injuries, while the fourth member of the group managed to escape and remains at large.

Following the violent encounter, authorities recovered a .38 caliber firearm from the scene. The tricycle used by the suspects was also impounded, along with the stolen loot: eleven fighting roosters with an estimated total value of P132,000.

The swift and decisive action of the police officer highlights the risks faced by law enforcement personnel, even when off-duty, and the potential dangers of confronting criminals in the act.

The incident also underscores the value placed on fighting roosters in certain communities, as evidenced by the significant monetary worth of the stolen birds.

Local authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident to determine the identities of all the individuals involved, including the suspect who remains at large.

The injured suspects are likely in police custody and will face charges related to the attempted robbery and the assault on the police officer.

The body of the deceased suspect has been turned over for identification and forensic examination.

Still in other news, a man intentionally lay down on the road directly in the path of the wheel of a pickup truck. It was during a traffic stop at the CP Garcia Highway, Davao City, according to Brigada News Philippines. Initially, after lying down and the car was not yet moving, the man got up, however, when traffic was about to move again, he returned to his position. When the car moved, the man was hit with the right back tire of the pickup truck, and the driver, sensing that he ran over something, immediately stopped to seek help from Central 911.
