A 5-year-old child tragically passed away a month after being bitten by a dog suspected of having rabies, according to a report by Brigada News Philippines.

The incident began when the child asked for permission from her mother to go outside and play.

Shortly after, a neighbor informed the family that the child had been bitten by a rabid dog.

The parents recounted that they saw their child bloodied and with a gaping bite on her face, and immediately rushed her to Bais District Hospital, arriving around 1 p.m.

However, the victim did not receive the anti-rabies injection until approximately 7 p.m. due to the unavailability of medical personnel to administer the shot.

Dr. Liland Estacion, head of the Provincial Health Office (PHO), stated in an interview that she has sent a team to investigate the incident, particularly the timeline of events leading to the delayed treatment.

She also emphasized the importance of local government units (LGUs) establishing animal bite centers to ensure immediate medical response, rather than relying solely on the PHO.

The case has raised concerns about accessibility and efficiency in handling rabies cases, highlighting the urgent need for properly equipped and staffed bite treatment facilities at the community level.
