After news of her arrest broke out, DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos and PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil immediately took the early morning flight for Indonesia to assume custody of the former mayor.

The former Bamban mayor is being viewed by some as one of the key persons in POGO operations in Tarlac.

When news of her arrest broke out yesterday, September 4, news reports about Indonesian authorities leaning towards a prisoner exchange also started circulating online.

Apparently, Indonesian authorities wanted to exchange Guo with a prisoner here in the Philippines, an Australian national suspected to be a member of the Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel, wanted in Indonesia for drug smuggling.

It wasn’t clear, however, if such prisoner exchange pushed through with the apparent turnover of Guo to Philippine officials who are now in Indonesia.

The former Bamban mayor is expected to return to the Philippines today.

Alice Leal Guo is the former Mayor of the Municipality of Bamban, Tarlac. She won as mayor during the national elections in 2022. She became known nationwide after her name was dragged into the ongoing Senate investigations regarding Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations or (POGO) and the alleged proliferation of illegal immigrants. Her name has been the subject of many online memes since then.

Yesterday, September 4, 2024, news of the arrest of Guo Hua Ping, also known as Alice Guo, spread like wildfire online. Sen. Win Gatchalian, in a social media post, announced that the Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor was arrested in Tangerang City, Jakarta. In a message sent to GMA News, Gatchalian said Guo was nabbed at 1:30 AM on September 4, 2024 and she is currently in the custody of the Indonesian Police. The news was also confirmed by NBI Director Jaime Santiago, according to ABS-CBN News.

After Guo's arrest, Indonesia, according to a GMA News report, is said to be leaning towards a prisoner exchange in the case of dismissed Mayor Alice Guo. According to news sources gathered by GMA, the Indonesian government would like to exchange Alice Guo for a Philippine prisoner who is also wanted in Indonesia. The report further stated that the case of the dismissed official is different from that of Cassandra Li-Ong and Sheila Guo, who were swiftly sent back to the Philippines after their arrest by Indonesian Immigration officers. GMA News also showed what appeared to be a screengrab of an Indonesian news site with headlines that suggest the Indonesian National Police is now negotiating with Philippine authorities on the possibility of a prisoner exchange.
