The actor and comedian, known for his role in Kamao, shared the experience during his guest appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Monday, October 5. According to Wendell, some of his friends who were volunteer firefighters encouraged him to undergo training.

“I have a lot of friends from mga volunteer firefighters.”
“Sabi nila, 'Bro, gusto mong mag-training?' sabi ko, 'Sige, gusto ko 'yan, eh. Kasi gusto ko makapagbigay nu'ng mga panahon na 'yun kasi Tito Boy at that time, lahat tayo nu'n, lost.”

“Kung babalikan natin, lahat ng tao, hindi alam kung hanggang kailan 'yun,” he said.

Wendell explained that he wanted to find a way to contribute during a period when many people were struggling to understand what would happen next. However, he also recognized the need to protect his own family and make sure he would still have enough resources for them.

“I have to protect also my family.”
Something like that,” he said.

For Wendell, the firefighter training was not only about learning how to respond to emergencies. He also saw it as an opportunity to encourage people who had lost their focus or hope during the pandemic.

His volunteer work eventually went beyond training. Wendell recalled responding to a fire incident where he went to the area and helped rescue people, including climbing onto rooftops.

He said the gratitude he received from the people he helped became a meaningful experience for him.

“Alam mo, nagpapasalamat 'yung tao so sabi ko 'Wow, what a great feeling, what a blessed ano for me kasi nakapagbigay ako,'” Wendell shared.

Although his career as an actor remains his main profession, Wendell said he continues to be on call as a firefighter, particularly when he is not occupied with work.

His experience during the pandemic showed a different side of the actor—one who chose to use his time and training to assist others while also balancing his responsibility to his family.
