The actress, known for her acclaimed performances in film and television, released an album titled Gelli in 1991 under VIVA Records. Its carrier single was reportedly “O, Lumapit Ka,” an original song by the band Hotdog.
Gelli opened up about her brief stint as a recording artist during her appearance on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” on Monday, September 21. She explained that becoming a singer was not something she had originally planned.
According to Gelli, the opportunity came after VIVA Communications CEO Vic del Rosario encouraged her to give recording a try.

“Kasi this was the '90s, VIVA Records. Nu'ng panahon na 'yun, kapag medyo nakakakanta ka, 'yung artista na nakakakanta, pwede. Ire-record mo naman. At 'yun ang naganap. Sabi ni Boss Vic, 'Sige na, mag-ano ka na, i-try mo,'” she explained.
The actress admitted that her confidence as a young performer helped convince her to take on the unexpected opportunity.
While Gelli's music venture became a memorable part of her career, she also looked back on a major milestone in her acting journey.
At just 22 years old, she won the Gawad Urian Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Secrets of Sarah Jane: Sana'y Mapatawad Mo. Looking back, Gelli said the significance of the achievement was not fully clear to her at the time.
“At that age, when I won, kasi naman, when you make a movie, don't think about 'I wanna make this so that I can get an award,' lalo na at that age, hindi mo naiisip. Ang naiisip mo lang, you wanna do it well. That's all you want to do, e,” Gelli said.
Years later, she said she has developed an even deeper appreciation for the recognition.
Gelli further reflected on how being young affected the way she viewed such a major career milestone.
