American physician and content creator Dr. Mike Varshavski, widely known as Doctor Mike, recently revisited a notable chapter of his personal life while discussing Filipino culture and pageantry with Filipino-Canadian nurse and content creator John Dela Cruz, also known as Nurse John.

The unexpected revelation came during a recent podcast conversation centered on Filipino culture, healthcare, and the strong sense of pride Filipinos feel toward personalities who succeed internationally.
Doctor Mike shared that he had worked with many Filipino healthcare professionals and praised them for bringing humor and warmth into what can often be a stressful and emotionally demanding field. Nurse John agreed, describing Filipinos as “happy people” while reflecting on the strong family connections and support systems he experienced growing up in the Philippines.
Their conversation eventually shifted toward the intense expectations placed on Filipinos who achieve international recognition. Nurse John cited Manny Pacquiao and Bruno Mars as examples before noting that the support can also come with significant pressure.

“Absolutely, but there is also pressure that they put on us with being Filipino, which is the pressure of like, ‘you better do good.’... And that pressure is so high that if we do something wrong, they can also scrutinize us,” Nurse John said.
When pageantry came up as an example, Doctor Mike revealed that he was more familiar with the Miss Universe world than Nurse John expected.
“That happens a lot in pageantry. I don't know if you know what Miss Universe is,” Nurse John said.
“Unfortunately, I'm very well-versed,” Doctor Mike replied.
He then explained why.
“Well, you probably don't know, but I should share some of my history. I dated Pia Wurtzbach at the peak of her career,” Doctor Mike maintained.
Nurse John was stunned by the admission.
“Hold on. Pia Wurtzbach? Are you kidding me right now?” he asked.
Doctor Mike confirmed that he was serious and joked, “So, I’m very well-versed.”
Their discussion then returned to the pressure surrounding beauty queens. Nurse John described the scrutiny as something candidates can experience at “every stage,” calling the environment “very toxic.”
