Award-winning rapper Gloc-9 looked back on the humble jobs that shaped his childhood, revealing that he once worked as a jeepney barker and conductor to help his father earn a living after returning from overseas.

During his guest appearance on Kara David's i-Listen, Gloc-9, whose real name is Aristotle Pollisco, shared that his father had worked in Saudi Arabia while he and his siblings were still young in hopes of providing a better future for the family. However, things changed after his father returned to the Philippines and struggled to find work.
To make ends meet, his father purchased a former fish delivery vehicle from Gloc-9's uncle and converted it into a passenger jeepney. Wanting to help, the future rap icon took on the role of barker and conductor during their daily trips around Binangonan, Rizal.
"Noong bumalik ang tatay ko, mas nagkaroon kami ng bonding dahil ako naman ang kaniyang konduktor kapag nagbibiyahe kami ng jeep. Siyempre, wala na siyang work eh nu’ng bumalik siya ng Pilipinas," Gloc-9 recalled.

He also fondly remembered calling out to waiting commuters by shouting:
"‘Binangonan! Binangonan! Binangonan!’"
Beyond helping his father, Gloc-9 said those experiences allowed him to closely observe different kinds of people. Instead of hanging outside the jeep, he stayed seated on a small stool inside the aisle, where he could see and hear every passenger.
"Part din ‘yun ng childhood ko... Ang upo ko kasi doon, hindi naman ako 'yung nakasabit sa labas. Ayaw ni tatay. So meron akong maliit na bangkito. So nakaupo ako sa gitna nu’ng aisle sa pagitan ng lahat ng pasahero para kita mo lahat ng pasahero. Alam mo kung sino 'yung hindi pa nagbabayad. So naririnig mo lahat ng pinagkukuwentuhan nila," he shared.
According to Gloc-9, that ability to observe and empathize with people eventually became one of his greatest strengths as a songwriter.
"Siguro kung meron man akong isang regalo na bigay sa akin, I see people, I hear people, I feel people, na malaking bagay sa pagsusulat ko ng kanta," he said.
The rapper also revealed that he once worked as a kitchen helper at the commissary of a Japanese fast-food restaurant and even cleaned drainage canals as part of his responsibilities.
"Pagdating ko ng 7 a.m., lilinisin ko 'yung garahe, kasi umalis na lahat ng delivery truck. Linisin ko 'yung garahe, labas ko lahat ng trash. Tapos lilinisin ko 'yung kanal sa tapat ng establishment," he recalled.
Reflecting on his journey, Gloc-9 credited his parents for teaching him to appreciate every opportunity that comes his way.
"Kung mayroong naituro sa akin ang mga magulang ko, make sure na kung ano ang opportunity na nasa harapan mo ngayon, ‘yun ang pinakamagandang opportunity ngayon. Pag-igihan mo dahil it leads to your next opportunity. It will lead you to your next work," he said.
He added that the lessons from those early jobs helped him mature not only as a person but also as a songwriter.

Meanwhile, Gloc-9 revealed that he has been prohibited from performing his socially conscious song Upuan at certain events. During his guest appearance on I-Listen, the rapper admitted that such experiences sometimes make him question whether he should continue performing some of his songs. He explained that his decisions are also influenced by his desire to return home safely to his child after every performance. Kara David, for her part, expressed hope that Upuan will continue inspiring people to recognize and reflect on social injustices.
