Motherhood is often celebrated as a joyful chapter, but actress Bianca King is bringing much-needed awareness to the hidden mental, emotional, and physical struggles that can come with it.

In an hour-long episode of the Say Wuht Podcast hosted by Abby Asistio and Gee Canlas, Bianca spoke candidly about her personal encounter with postpartum depression and extreme isolation while raising her child abroad.

Bianca noted that being away from her usual support system made the transition into motherhood significantly harder.

"My postpartum experience was very different because I did it in a first-world country where I don't have close friends, I don't have family," Bianca bared. "Motherhood in itself is a very isolating [experience], can be depressing in itself and its extremely difficult. It's extremely difficult nga even if you have help eh, pero syempre, ilagay mo yung isang tao na nasanay na may kasama sa buhay, na may kasama sa bahay, at ilagay mo siya sa isang lugar na walang kilala? It adds so many layers of difficulty."

Bianca detailed how overwhelming it became when her husband returned to his job shortly after the birth of their baby, leaving her to manage all child-rearing responsibilities and household chores by herself.

"For me, the darkness was a bit more intense nga kasi my husband went back to work after two weeks, so I did all the day and night care alone and I was just crying more than happy," she admitted. "I just felt so alone, and parang I did not enjoy those early stages of motherhood a lot, or enough kasi I was just trying to survive. I was constantly in survival mode."

The physical toll of having no extra hands at home meant even basic daily tasks felt nearly impossible.

"My nervous system was just out of whack, I was exhausted, I wasn't eating, nobody was taking care of me, I had chores, and then I had a baby, and the baby was attached to me the whole time. I couldn't even take showers, or go to the toilet, things like that," Bianca recalled. "Tas my friends back home would have night nurses, they had a day yaya or a night yaya, and all their meals were made for them, I was like aware of that and I guess that also contributed to me feeling like: 'Why am I going through this here by myself?'"

Hearing about her grueling daily routine, Bianca’s friends in the Philippines expressed deep concern and sympathy, which eventually motivated her to return home.

"The feedback from them really drove me to come back because they're like... they really felt bad for me, talagang naaawa sila for me and some are even angry na that's the situation that I was in," Bianca concluded. "They couldn't believe how I survived, they were in shock of all the stories."

She said returning to the Philippines was mainly for support as a mother because living abroad put her in survival mode and left her exhausted. She explained she wanted a better motherhood experience surrounded by family and a strong support system for her child.
