Veteran actor Cesar Montano shared his thoughts on what separates a good actor from an ordinary performer, emphasizing that one important quality is often overlooked.

During the June 3 episode of Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Montano, also known as Buboy, explained that acting is not only about talent, emotions, or technique. For him, one of the most essential skills is the ability to listen.

“If you're not a good listener, malabong mangyari. Kailangan marunong kang makinig nang maayos,” said Montano.

The award-winning actor added that actors must learn how to listen not only to other people but also to themselves. According to him, genuine listening helps create natural and believable performances on screen.

“Like for example, ito, hindi tayo umaarte, ano ang ginagawa natin? We listen to each other. Bakit itong quality na ginagawa natin is the quality na kailangan kunin ng direktor? Kasi natural, e. Natural ito, we're not acting. But we just listen to each other,” he explained.

Host Boy Abunda agreed with the importance of authenticity in performance and shared his own struggles when it comes to acting.

“Ang napakahirap gawin, hindi lamang 'yung mga highly dramatic scenes, ang pinakasisimpleng bagay. 'Walk to the left and sit.' 'Pag pinagawa mo 'yun, nako-conscious ka,” said Abunda.

The veteran television host noted that performing simple movements naturally in front of a camera is a gift that not everyone possesses.

Montano then discussed acting techniques and how they should never appear forced or mechanical. While actors may study various methods, he believes the audience should not notice the technique itself.

“Kailangan, walang corners, kailangan malambot, flowing. Kumbaga sa nagpapahid ng brush, dapat natural 'yun. So 'yung makitang may kanto 'yung acting mo, ibig sabihin, stiff,” he said.

The actor further stressed that performers must have a clear understanding of their purpose in every scene.

“Ang importante du'n, kailangan 'yung objective mo, klaro. Klaro sa isip mo.”

Throughout the interview, Montano highlighted that effective acting goes beyond dramatic delivery.
