Content creator and LGBTQIA+ advocate Sassa Gurl recently spoke about her experiences with bullying and how she reclaimed a once-derogatory label during her guest appearance on Your Honor, hosted by Chariz Solomon and Buboy Villar.

In a segment discussing the meaning of “baklang kanal,” Sassa shared that the term was often used as an insult in the past.

“Kasi 'pag sinasabing 'baklang kanal' parang mga degoratory ganiyan, medyo panlait siya. Ngayon, in-empower na namin mga baklang kanal 'yung mga sarili namin,” she explained.

Looking back on her childhood, Sassa recalled the challenges she faced growing up.

“Nung bagets ako, 'pag baklang kanal talagang makakaranas ka ng mga bullying ganiyan,” she said.

She described how she was often targeted, even by older individuals, because of her identity.

Despite these experiences, Sassa emphasized resilience and standing up for oneself.

“Pero, siyempre kami mga baklang kalsada nilaban talaga namin 'yung mga place namin sa kalsada,” she shared.

She added that fighting back became a way to protect herself. “'Pag kunwari may mga ganap-ganap na binu-bully ka lalaban ka pabalik ganun!”

During the discussion, Chariz Solomon also shared her thoughts on authenticity within the LGBTQIA+ community.

“'Yung mga gay people hindi lang ito isolated sa mga bakla ah or bading,” she said, noting how openness and honesty often define their expression.

Sassa agreed with this perspective, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself.

“Kasi parang kami alam mo yan totoo ka lang,” she said, explaining that authenticity is valued within their community.

Sassa Gurl, whose real name is Felix Petate, is a Filipino content creator and LGBTQIA+ personality who gained popularity through her relatable and humorous TikTok videos. Her online success eventually opened doors in mainstream entertainment, where she ventured into acting and received praise for her performance in the film Balota. She has also taken on roles beyond acting, including mentoring in Drag Den, while continuing to push for better representation of quee*r voices in Philippine media.

In another update, Sassa delighted her followers after revealing a thoughtful birthday present from Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera. She shared an Instagram reel featuring a Carolina Herrera handbag with a cream-patterned design and burgundy leather details. Along with the gift, Marian included a handwritten note expressing her wishes for Sassa’s love, health, and happiness. The two previously worked together on Balota, and their playful “mother-daughter” dynamic has extended beyond the screen, drawing positive reactions from fans.

Meanwhile, Sassa also opened up about her experience working with Marian in an interview with The Philippine Star. She jokingly described the actress as “maldita,” but quickly clarified that it was meant in a lighthearted way. Sassa emphasized that Marian was professional and easy to work with throughout their project. “Si mama talagang ang gaan ka-work. Hindi siya diva. Caring siya sa mga co-actors niya,” she said. She also shared that Marian’s warm personality disproved earlier impressions she had heard, leaving her pleasantly surprised by the actress’s kindness.
