The young star’s confession came during the press conference for her Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry, “Rekonek,” a film that ironically explores the chaos of a world suddenly cut off from the internet.

Andrea, who is returning to the big screen after an almost four-year hiatus, revealed that her addiction to her phone had reached an unhealthy point.

“I noticed I was getting incredibly addicted to my phone, and it’s hard not to be, because this is my generation,” she explained. “I was born into the age of social media and the internet. Even my work as an actress, and my businesses, rely completely on my phone. Every interaction, like connecting with product suppliers from China—how do we communicate? I need to talk to them on Telegram and other apps.”

The constant need to be online resulted in what she described as unhealthy habits, including "doom scrolling" that kept her awake until 3 a.m.

“What was happening to me was that I was losing sleep, staying on the phone until 3 a.m. I was suffering from 'brain rot' and 'bed rot.' I realized, this isn’t right anymore. My brain wasn't healthy anymore, nor was I physically healthy because I wasn't even standing up; I was just on my phone the whole time,” she admitted candidly.

To regain control, Andrea downloaded a specialized app designed to curb screen time. The app functions by locking specific social media applications, preventing her from accessing them during self-imposed downtime.

Her most critical measure? Locking her Instagram access from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. This forced disconnection allows her to focus her mind on other priorities, including physical activities and staying productive without the constant digital drain.

“I could disappear and still have a productive day, and I could engage in physical activities instead of just being glued to the phone,” she noted, encouraging others to try the method, believing that the effects of phone addiction are now widespread and undeniable.

The press event also highlighted Brillantes' role in Rekonek, where she plays an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) whose life is upended by the global internet crash.

The film is a significant shift for the actress, who is known for her emotionally demanding, heavy drama roles on television.

"This is truly me entering my comedic era now," she shared excitedly. “You know me as the one who is always crying in teleseryes; always heavy drama. This is my first truly light role, so I’m really happy. It felt so easy. I hope you see me in a different light here.”

Although director Jade Castro couldn't resist sneaking in one crying scene, Andrea felt liberated, stating, "It was fun because the director really allowed me to be myself."

Andrea expressed enthusiasm for the final product, especially the collaborative nature of the ensemble cast, including Gerald Anderson, Carmina Villarroel, and Bela Padilla.

"I’m really excited for all of you to watch this," she concluded, offering an early Christmas greeting to her fans.
