The award is oftentimes given to persons who performed “exemplary acts in the conduct of search and rescue resulting in saving someone else’s life.”

The actor is a reserve officer of the Philippine Army and at the same time, holds the rank of Auxiliary Commander with the PCG.

Last month, he went viral after photos and videos of him helping rescue a family stranded in Barangay Sto Domingo in Quezon City by floodwaters brought by Typhoon Carina, surfaced online.

The video of him rescuing the family was uploaded on social media by a kin of the family.

In another video, Gerald was seen braving chest to neck-deep floodwaters as he tried and successfully brought a makeshift boat to the stranded victims.

In an interview following the awarding ceremony, he thanked PCG for recognizing his efforts and said he’s sharing his award with other rescuers and volunteers.

“Thankful ako sa Coast Guard na they recognized yung efforts ko, but I share this award with other rescuers, sa other volunteers, lahat ng nag-donate para makatulong din sa iba,” Gerald said.

“What thing I said na sana my actions na nakita sa Facebook will inspire others to also help,” he added.

Gerald Randolph Opsima Anderson Jr., or simply Gerald Anderson, is a Filipino-American actor born on March 7, 1989. He is best known for his lead roles in several TV series, including Sana Maulit Muli, My Girl, Tayong Dalawa, Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo, and Budoy. He was the ex-boyfriend and Kim Chiu, and his present girlfriend is Julia Barretto.

Meanwhile, Gerald's girlfriend, actress Julia Barretto, expressed her worries about her BF being exposed in danger, though at the same time, expressed pride in what he did during the height of Typhoon Carina. It can be recalled that Gerald helped rescue a family who was stranded in Barangay Sto. Domingo in Quezon City. Julia said what Gerald did exemplified the goodness in his heart.

Recently, Gerald also took to Instagram and shared a touching video that showed the hard work of the volunteers during typhoon Carina. The video showed a compilation of how volunteers risked their lives saving men, women, babies, elderly, and animals. It showed clips that were not seen nor featured in major news outlets. In all of the clips, Gerald did not post a picture of himself but highlighted the bravery of others.
