PBA legend, comedian Yoyong Martires passes away at 77

- He peacefully died at the age of 77 on June 18, his family announced

- Aside from being an athlete, Yoyong also joined showbiz as a comedian and became involved in politics in Pasig City

PBA legend, Olympian, comedian and politician Rosalio "Yoyong" Martires passed away on Tuesday, June 18. He was 77 years old.

His daughter, Moby Leah Martires, announced the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 19.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Rosalio 'Yoyong' D. Martires," she revealed.

"He has peacefully joined our Creator yesterday, June 18, 2024. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Furthermore, Moby Leah penned a heartfelt tribute to her late father. She also wrote an earnest farewell message for Yoyong.

"He lived a very adventurous and colorful life. A loving husband, a doting father, a caring grandpa, a self-made man, an Olympian, a prolific basketball player, a comedian, a devoted public servant, and a child of Christ. Difficult steps to follow, indeed. You served God, our country, and your fellow men. Rest in Peace, papa. We love you!"

Born in Catbalogan, Samar, Yoyong played for Southwestern University in Cebu and later for San Miguel in the now-defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) and the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) from 1972 to 1982. He was also part of the Philippine national basketball team that participated in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

The basketball legend also entered showbiz as a comedian. Likewise, he became involved in politics in Pasig City, serving as vice mayor in 2004 and 2013 and councilor from 1995 to 2004 and 2013 to 2022.

Aside from Yoyong, there were other prominent personalities who died recently.

Jaclyn Jose passed away last March 2 at the age of 60. Based on the statement provided by Andi Eigenmann, her mother died due to a myocardial infarction, or a heart attack.

Deo Endrinal, the head of Dreamscape Entertainment, has passed away. This was confirmed by his son, PJ Endrinal, in a heartfelt Instagram post. Dreamscape also announced the unfortunate news on social media.
