In an interview with The Philippine Star, Luis expressed confidence that the veteran actress and public servant’s accomplishments speak for themselves, regardless of whether she receives the country’s prestigious cultural distinction.

The discussion followed the announcement of the newest National Artists through Proclamation No. 1414, signed by President Marcos on September 1. Vilma, widely recognized for her decades-long career in Philippine entertainment and her years in public service, was not among the recipients.

For Luis, however, the absence of the title does not diminish his mother’s achievements or the impact she has made across different fields.

“Siguro naman, hindi man nabigyan nung title na National Artist, wala nang pwedeng kumuwestiyon sa body of work ni Mommy, whether it be sa movies, sa TV, idamay mo pa ang pulitika. I don’t think anyone could question,” Luis said.

His statement emphasized that Vilma’s legacy extends beyond her filmography. Throughout her career, she has established herself as one of the country’s most prominent actresses while also taking on responsibilities in government, making her accomplishments recognizable to audiences from different generations.

Luis acknowledged that receiving the National Artist title would certainly be welcome if it eventually happened. However, he made it clear that his mother does not depend on the distinction to validate her life’s work.

“Ngayon, kung dumating ang oras, dumating ang araw na gawin siyang National Artist, thank you very much,” he expressed.

The television host added that Vilma’s happiness does not revolve around receiving the honor. Instead, he believes she can look back on her accomplishments with contentment, knowing that she has made meaningful contributions in several areas of her life.

“Pero hindi siya yung… hindi umiikot ang mundo niya sa pagiging National Artist. She gets to sleep knowing na she’s happy sa lahat ng nagawa niya sa mga different industries, lalong-lalo na bilang magulang at bilang lola.”

While Vilma has spent decades in the public eye, her identity extends beyond her achievements as an actress and politician. She is also a mother and grandmother whose family relationships remain an important part of her life.

Just weeks before Luis shared his thoughts, Vilma herself addressed the conversations about not being named a National Artist, according to The Manila Bulletin.

At 72, the actress and public servant expressed her belief that what is meant for her will eventually happen. Her response suggested that she was not allowing the discussion to overshadow her personal priorities or sense of fulfillment.

Vilma also explained that her attention is increasingly focused on her family, loved ones, and peace of mind. Rather than making the recognition the center of her concerns, she has chosen to appreciate what she already has and the accomplishments she has achieved.
