Jopay Paguia of the SexBomb Girls recently shared a reflective message about accepting correction, learning from mistakes, and remaining open to advice. The singer and performer based her reflection on Proverbs 12:1, which says, “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.”

Rather than simply sharing the Bible verse, Jopay expanded on its message by explaining how discipline and correction can contribute to personal growth. She emphasized that seeking knowledge also requires a willingness to acknowledge that one may be wrong.

According to her reflection, refusing to accept correction does not prevent mistakes from happening. Instead, it can prevent a person from learning from those mistakes and gaining wisdom through experience.

“The proverb connects wisdom with the willingness to be corrected,” Jopay explained. “A person who loves knowledge must also be willing to discover that (s)he is wrong.”

Her message also touched on the difference between accepting advice that agrees with one’s existing beliefs and accepting criticism that challenges those beliefs.

Jopay noted that listening to advice can be relatively easy when the advice confirms what a person already thinks. The more difficult situation, she pointed out, happens when another person identifies something that the individual would rather defend.

“It is easy to listen to advice when it confirms what we already believe,” she wrote. “The harder moment comes when someone points out something in us that we would rather defend.”

The reflection then contrasted pride with wisdom. Jopay described pride as the mindset that assumes there is nothing more to learn, while wisdom involves recognizing that there may still be something valuable to discover.

“Pride says, ‘I already know.’ Wisdom says, ‘Maybe there is something I need to learn,’” she wrote.

For Jopay, having a teachable heart means being prepared to receive correction even when the experience is uncomfortable. The reflection comes from a member of the SexBomb Girls, the popular Filipino dance and performance group that became a major part of Philippine entertainment during its heyday. Jopay was among the members who became recognizable to television audiences through the group’s performances and subsequent entertainment projects.

The SexBomb Girls originally gained prominence through the noontime program “Eat Bulaga!” after becoming associated with its “Laban o Bawi” segment. Their energetic performances helped establish the group as one of the country’s most recognizable girl groups.
