Liza Soberano shared her honest opinion about a social rule in Filipino culture that she believes people should unlearn.

In an Instagram reel shared by BuzzFeed Oz, the actress was asked to name one Filipino social rule that she thinks should no longer be practiced.

Before answering, Liza admitted that the topic strongly affects her.

“Sorry, I get triggered with that one,” she said.

The celebrity then identified “utang na loob” as the cultural concept she would like people to reconsider.

“Utang na loob, because I feel like, yes, it’s always nice to be grateful for the things that you’ve achieved, people that have helped you, and everything,” she explained.

However, the actress stressed that gratitude should not make someone feel indebted for the rest of their life.

“But it shouldn’t be considered a lifetime debt that you have to repay those who have helped you,” she continued.

For the star, acknowledging the people who offered support remains important. Still, she believes that such help should not be used to place a permanent obligation on the person who received it.

Liza also spoke about the intentions behind helping someone. She said kindness should be offered sincerely instead of being treated as something that must eventually be repaid.

“And I feel like people should learn to just help out of the kindness of their heart without expecting anything in return,” she said.

The actress acknowledged that receiving something in return can still feel good. However, she emphasized that it should never be demanded or automatically expected.

“It’s always nice to have something returned, but do not expect it,” she added.

Her remarks drew a distinction between being grateful and feeling permanently bound to another person. Based on her explanation, people can recognize the support they received while still being free to make their own decisions.
