Film and television director Monti Puno Parungao, whose credits include GMA Network programs “Survivor Philippines,” “StarStruck” and “Dear Uge,” has died at the age of 58.

Monti passed away on Tuesday morning, Sept. 1, at his home in Quezon City, according to his brother Hardy Parungao. He had been battling stage 4 colon cancer and underwent several surgeries in recent months.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Hardy confirmed Monti’s passing and shared that the family would provide details about a service honoring his life.

Hardy began the statement by announcing Monti’s death and expressing the family’s grief over the loss.

“It is with great sadness that the Parungao family announces the passing of EDGARDO PUNO PARUNGAO III (Direk Monti) on September 1, 2026.”

He then said that details about the service to honor Monti’s life would be shared by the family at a later time.

“Details of a service to celebrate and honor his life will follow.”

Hardy ended the statement by expressing the family’s gratitude to those who have offered their prayers, love and support.

“The family is grateful for your prayers, love and support.”

Aside from director Monti Parungao, several other local celebrities have also passed away recently — leaving the Philippine entertainment industry mourning the loss of familiar names who have made their mark in television, film, music, and showbiz.

Vanessa Blanca Rangadhol, the singer behind the popular song “DOTA O Ako,” passed away at 30 following an accident in Manila. Her cousin Ivy shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook on Wednesday, August 19. Vanessa’s family asked friends, fans, and supporters to respect their privacy during their time of mourning. Ivy described Vanessa as a dearly loved relative whom she considered her little sister. Vanessa was part of QTV’s “Pop Star Kids” in 2005 before later becoming a member of Sugarpop alongside Julie Anne San Jose, Rita Daniela, Pocholo Bismonte, and Renzo Almario.

Earlier, “Ipaglaban Mo!” host Atty. Jose Sison passed away at the age of 88, with his son, lawyer Jopet Sison, confirming the news on July 23. Jopet shared that his father lived a full life as a lawyer, husband, father, and grandfather, while asking the public to keep him in their prayers. His wake was scheduled to begin on July 24 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Cubao, with the interment set for July 28 in Antipolo City. Jose became a familiar television personality through “Ipaglaban Mo!” during its original run from 1992 to 1999 and later returned when the program was revived in 2014, hosting it until 2020.
