Angeli recalled that when they got married on Gary’s 20th birthday, August 6, 1984, doctors told her that due to his Type 1 juvenile diabetes diagnosed in 1978, he was only expected to live until age 44, around the year 2008. “I said to myself that was still so far away in 1984,” she wrote, reflecting on the limited diabetes management options available back then. But thanks to medical advances, real-time glucose monitoring, lifestyle changes, and divine providence, Gary not only survived but thrived—celebrating his 61st birthday and 41 years of marriage.
Angeli credited their journey to God’s grace, improved health technology, Gary’s disciplined diet and exercise, and her own relentless research—even before the internet era. She shared that Gary now uses modern gadgets for hourly glucose monitoring and even has tools like Glucagon for emergencies. She also mentioned his eyes remain free of glaucoma and have even improved after 47 years with diabetes—something she called miraculous.
Ending her testimony with gratitude and joy, Angeli praised the Lord for blessing them with their children—Paolo, Gab, and Kiana—as well as their foster son Fili and grandchildren Leia and Luch. “Every year of Gary’s life is a bonus from God,” she wrote. “We praise God for this miraculous special life who has inspired millions through his songs and his life.”
This is her full testimony:
“I have a testimony to share. When I married Gary, he turned 20 that day August 6. 1984. We had a civil wedding ! Soon after, the doctor told me that his estimated life span was 30 years after date of diagnosis of his Type 1 insulin dependent juvenile diabetes ~ 1978. Meaning his estimated life span was till 2008. At age 44. And I said to myself that was still so far away in 1984! But that was when diabetes management was not advanced and through the years technology gave us real-time glucose monitoring gadgets that allowed him to check his sugar levels 3-4 times a day. Thus extending his life span. I also researched a lot through books I bought and encyclopedias (then when there was no Internet) !!! Today he can check his sugar levels every hour through a gadget attached to his arm plus we have what we call Glucagon like an Epi-pen for first aid! Meantime the internet has taught me a lot through the various medical platforms plus the added open source available apps like Chat GPT and GROK. Also, he tightened his daily diet and regularized his exercise. So now, his eyes, which are a window to the state of his health has always been glaucoma-free! Miraculously today the grade of his eyes even went down after 47 years of the disease. So yesterday, he turned 61 and my marriage - 41 years !
