President Rodrigo Duterte has recently signed into law a measure which seeks to provide unemployment insurance to the members of Social Security System (SSS) who were dismissed from their work.
KAMI learned that President Duterte signed the Republic Act 11199 or the Social Security Act of 2019 on February 8, which was authored by Senator Richard Gordon.
According to a report by Manila Bulletin, the measure is the first one in the country to provide involuntary separation benefits for two months while the members are still trying to find for new employment.

Sen. Gordon said that a member can get at least P10, 000 if the member had been paying the “contributions under the maximum salary credit.”
However, according to Section 14-B of RA 11199, an involuntarily unemployed member can get the benefit which is equivalent to 50 percent of his average monthly salary credit for a maximum of two months.
In a report by Esquire Magazine, the law stated that those who can avail the benefit must be below 60-years-old and a member can only get it once every three years.
As previously reported by KAMI, President Duterte signed a law to amend the charter of SSS. The new act included the mandatory SSS coverage for the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
