He expressed gratitude to families who assisted him when he was just starting out and acknowledged the valuable contribution of Freddie Roach, his trainer, and Buboy Fernandez, his friend and also a trainer.
The boxing legend recalled the time when his coach brought him to the US where he met Roach at the Wild Card boxing gym.
“Freddie Roach was not only my trainer, but also my family, a brother, and a friend,” the boxing legend said.

Roach helped Manny win in several divisions, until he became the only boxer in history so far to have won 12 major world championship titles in 8 different weight divisions.
The former pound for pound king also acknowledged his other trainers, foremost among them is his friend, Buboy Fernandez.
“When you speak of friends, there is no one closer to me than Buboy Fernandez, whom I have known for almost my whole life. He is more than a coach to me,” Manny said.
Fernandez is said to be the only person who was always present in Manny’s corner in all of his 71 professional fights.
In all those fights, the one that stood out is the final fight of Manny against Marquez in December of 2012.
When Marquez managed to land a straight at Manny and knocked him out, the first person the boxing legend looked for was none other than Fernandez, who immediately went to his side after shooing away the doctors.
“I cannot imagine that I am here now. Our life was so hard. Today, every time I sleep with my kids, in my massive bedroom, in my massive home, I tell this story to them where Manny and I started and they cry. Manny wants me to tell them our story, which is you work hard and you can achieve. So every night, I tell them,” Fernandez said in past interviews.
After almost three decades in boxing, Manny has bid boxing goodbye.
