An emotional Sen. Manny Pacquiao, in the video where he announced his retirement, in a broken voice narrated how he was rejected when he applied to be one of the Philippine delegates to the Olympics.

The boxing legend was referring to the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, back when he was still 17 or 18 years old.

He said he nurtured hopes that one day, he would have a shot at getting an Olympic gold.

“Nangarap po ako na magkaroon ng pagkakataon na makalaban sa Olympics,” Manny said.

However, it would seem this dream proved elusive for him as he was not among those who were chosen to compete in the Olympics.

“Ngunit hindi po ako nakuha na maging bahagi ng Philippine team,” he revealed.

The teary-eyed boxing legend then recalled the reason given him for the rejection.

“Na-reject po ako. Sinasabing wala raw po akong pag-asa sa boxing,” Manny, in a voice laden with emotion, said.

At this point, with a slightly broken voice, Manny said that instead of losing hope, he kept the flame alive and did not become discouraged by the rejection.

“Ngunit hindi po ako nawalan ng pag-asa. Hindi po ako na-discourage,” he said

The 8-division champion then expressed gratitude to the province of Davao del Sur for welcoming them into their team.

“Mabuti na lang tinanggap po ako ng Davao del Sur province upang maging bahagi ng kanilang boxing team. Sila po ay naniwala sa akin,” Manny said.

The former Pound for Pound King went on to make boxing history on the world stage. He is the only boxer, so far, to have acquired 12 major world championship titles in 8 different weight divisions.

Manny Pacquiao is an eight-division world boxing champion, considered one of the greatest boxers in history. He also found success as a politician, first becoming a congressman before getting elected as a senator. Manny is married to Jinkee Pacquiao, whom he called his best friend.
