A rare first issue of the Superman comic, found in an attic, fetched $9.12 million at an auction in Texas.
Three brothers discovered it while cleaning out their late mother’s home in San Francisco.
They said their mother and her brother had a valuable comic collection but never showed it.
The comic had been tucked away under newspapers and forgotten for years.

The youngest brother said their mother had hidden the box carefully, but over time, life and losses pushed it aside.
Heritage Auctions in Texas inspected the comic three months after its discovery.
Lon Allen, vice president of comics at Heritage, noted it could have easily been destroyed or thrown away.
Superman No. 1, released in 1939 by Detective Comics Inc., is extremely rare, and this copy is in excellent condition.
It was not in a protective case but remained in mint shape because of Northern California’s cool climate, which preserved its spine, colors, and corners.
Comics grading company CGC gave it a 9.0 out of 10 rating.
Heritage Auctions explained that while the first print run was 500,000 copies, many were damaged because kids cut the back cover for a pinup.
This made surviving near-pristine copies extremely rare. Both the brothers and buyer chose to remain anonymous due to the high value.
Heritage Auctions described it as “the pinnacle of comic collecting,” topping the CGC census and surpassing other famous copies like the Mile High and Davis Crippen editions.
