The shooting happened two days after classes resumed at Annunciation Catholic School, a private elementary with around 395 students.
The church where the attack took place is inside the school grounds.
Officials confirmed the suspect had no major criminal record, and the motive remains under investigation.
Among the wounded were three adults, with several victims in critical condition.
According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, more than 140 school shootings have already been recorded in U.S. elementary and secondary schools this year.
In the same city, three other shootings recently occurred, including one at a Jesuit high school that left three dead and seven injured.
Police believe these incidents are not connected to the Annunciation school tragedy.
